The parents of your Australian friend Chris have invited you to a surprise birthday party for him. Write a letter to Chris’s parents. In your letter: •Say why you think Chris will enjoy the surprise party • Explain why you won’t be able to attend the party • Give details of a plan to see Chris at different time Dear Mr. and Mrs. Collins,

I am writing to send my apologies that I will not be able to take part in Chris’s birthday
party
. I think that Chris will enjoy the
party
because he has
such
a thoughtful and kind parent that has decided to plan a
party
and invite his friends. On top of that, I am sure he will be proud of you for creating
such
an amazing chance for him to be happy and have fun with his lovely friends. I am sorry to say that I cannot join
this
birthday
party
since I have a very important job interview in a company
that is
a valuable opportunity for me to get employed. What’s more, if I get the job, I am sure that I will have a high position which will provide job security and financial opportunities.
Although
I, unfortunately, cannot attend the
party
, I will send a message to Chris to set a time and meet each other at the park, and I will apologize for not coming to
this
gathering.
However
, I will send a worthy gift to him beforehand. I look forward to your reply. Best regards, Kambiz Pirzad

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
